Love is in the Air
After being brought to the zoo in the summer of 2004 with her brother, female white Bengal Tiger "Sheba" has been introduced to her new mate. " Kashmir" (shown right) is an even rarer "Tabby" tiger whose stripes are butterscotch instead of black. The union of these two could produce the most rare of all tiger colors, pure white with no stripes.
Fun Fact: White tigers are not a distinct species. They are a mutation of Bengal Tiger and are sometimes crossed with Siberian Tigers to increase the breed's size. For more on the history of white tigers, click here. |

Malagasy Lemurs Leap -
Our growing family of Lemurs enjoy a new home.
As every family knows, even the coziest of homes gets cramped when you add a little one to the mix. Catoctin Wildlife Preserve has had so much wonderful success with births of the endangered Ruffed Lemurs from Madagascar that we have given them a new home.
Frequent guests of the zoo will know where our Lorikeets have been since 1999. It's an open exhibit with plenty of sunlight, high peaks and room to romp. It has proven to be perfect for the Lemurs.
During the peak season, unique Malagasy reptiles are on display in the lemur's winter house. These include rare boas, Spider Tortoises, Day Geckos, small chameleons, and rear-fanged Hog Nosed Snakes. |

Also in this area are Ringtail Lemurs, Red-fronted Lemurs, White-fronted Lemurs and Black Lemurs.
